If you’re looking for a fabulous beach destination for your family, Belize should be at the top of your list. Many of my clients have done Mexico for a few years and are looking for something a little different, but still easy to access, safe and affordable. A great family trip to Belize combines the jungle, Mayan ruins and of course some time at the beach.
One of the unique things about Belize is the growing number of private homes and villas, many of which have been constructed in the past few years. In fact, unlike Mexico, Belize has more good villa options than hotel or resort options along the coast.
There are a few lovely beach areas along the coast of Belize, with Ambergris Caye being the most popular – and populated. Ambergris Caye, an island located off the coast of northern Belize, has beautiful, white, soft sandy beaches around the entire island. Here you’ll also find crystal clear water and because the barrier reef is quite close to the Caye, there is very little seaweed and no waves.
Staying in a home or villa ensures that everyone has plenty of room to spread out, young children can nap as needed and you’ll have access to a full kitchen so you can prepare meals everyone will enjoy. At the end of this post you can get a copy of a fabulous family itinerary to Belize, that combines a fabulous resort in the jungle with some time at the beach. There are several amazing villas in Ambergris Caye that are ideal for families, and can easily be substituted in the itinerary.
Here are a few of my favorite Belize beachfront rentals that are perfect for families.
This amazing villa is a perfect option for a family of 4! Located on Cayo Espanto, a tiny, private resort island located off the coast about a 10 minute boat ride to San Pedro, this two story, two-bedroom villa also includes all meals, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages in the nightly rate of about $2,195.
I love the light color scheme of the decorating, along with plenty of natural fibers, wood and beautiful linens. There is plenty of space to spread out and hang out, listening to the sounds of the ocean all around.
Keep in mind this is a super tiny island. A sandy path winds through a forest of palms down the center of this 4-acre island, branching off to each beautifully detailed villa. The villas are very private, kept secluded from neighbors by silver-trunked black mangrove trees. The island rises just a foot or two above the surrounding waters, which are the favorite haunt of bonefish (attention fly fishing enthusiasts!).
And then there is Villa Paraiso, an amazing value for money for a Belize beachfront rental priced from about $550 per night. Located only about 3 miles from San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, a main feature of Villa Paraiso is its large living space where you can really enjoy family time.
This villa has a fabulous pool and the beach is only a short walk away, with sea kayaks available on site.
The master bedroom includes a king size bed and adjoining spacious bathroom with shower, whirlpool tub and double sinks. The second bedroom is ideal for kids (can sleep 3 kids comfortably) between a queen bed and twin day bed. Finally, there is a 3rd bedroom with King bed with a private separate entrance leading out to the garden.
Located in the same development as Villa Paraiso, this three bedroom villa features a master bedroom with king bed and lavish bathroom with shower and whirlpool tub. This development, called Belizean Cove Estates, is a lovely cluster of villas in a secluded location on Ambergris Caye (though still easy to access San Pedro for food, etc).
The second bedroom includes a queen bed, and a lovely third bedroom with two twin beds, set up just for kiddos. Each bedroom has a private door to the outside. This is perfect for a family of 4 traveling with grandparents.
Brushstrokes Villa also has a lovely pool just steps from the beach and a lovely covered pier, a perfect setting for a sunset cocktail! Here you can utilize a chef as you wish (a must at least a few nights!) and take advantage of the staff’s local knowledge to plan perfectly fun and adventurous days.
Getting out on and under the water is the main attraction in Belize and particularly on Ambergris Caye. Kids as young as five or six years old can enjoy snorkeling. Practice using a mask and snorkel in the bathtub or in a pool before your trip so they can get the hang of things. With one of the largest barrier reef systems in the world, the diving and snorkeling here is excellent.
