Thinking about heading down to Mexico for a fun and easy family beach getaway? Of course there are plenty of fabulous resorts along the Riviera Maya coastline, but if you’re looking for a small, intimate experience be sure to consider Tulum. This charming, rustic community has the best stretch of beach on the Yucatan peninsula, is home to some of the most well-preserved Mayan ruins, and is teeming with fresh, local restaurants, cute boutiques and yoga studios a plenty!
Here is my pick for the best hotel for families in Tulum Mexico; a lovely property called La Zebra.
The rooms are perfect for families
Unlike many hotels in Tulum, the rooms are La Zebra are large, clean and offer plenty of room for families. A few years ago the hotel actually had a fire and most of the buildings were damaged beyond repair. After closing down and completely rebuilding , La Zebra is looking better than ever.
Here, the standard rooms include a King bed -as well as a large, comfortable sofa that includes trundle beds below. Kids don’t have to cram onto one small sofa bed, they have a bit of their own space, so everyone is happy!
Best beach area
Having been around since before Tulum was the epicenter of cool that it is today, La Zebra commands one of the best locations. In addition to being on the widest, longest stretch of beach in Tulum, it’s near the Sian Ka’an biosphere entrance and near to several of Tulum’s best restaurants (hello Hartwood!).
Here you can walk for miles in either directly, or lounge just steps from the ocean.
While there are plenty of dining options in Tulum, the on site restaurant is fabulous and you’ll in fact see plenty of non-guests at the restaurant as it’s a bit of a destination – particular ahead of their weekly Sunday night Salsa dancing event!
Of course Mexican food is the main feature, but with a fresh Tulum twist and some traditional Mayan flavors thrown in. Consider booking the “chefs table” for a custom, unique dining experience once during your stay!
Due to strict building regulations in Tulum, along with the general eco-friendly ethos here, many of the hotels here don’t have pools. Tulum is for ocean lovers so that is most definitely the main attraction. However, at La Zebra some of the rooms have private plunge pools. This is a great feature if traveling with kids, as it’s really convenient to head back to your room in the afternoon so parents can have a little siesta and the kids can splash in the pool and get out of the sun a bit.
There is also a common area pool near the restaurant that is also shaded and perfect for an afternoon splash after a day at the beach and the final reason why La Zebra is my choice for the best hotel for families in Tulum Mexico.
