Belize is hot right now. Between the lush jungle, access to some of the most important Mayan ruins and a stunning Caribbean coastline, this year many of my clients have been discovering this small Central American country.
But as I’ve mentioned before, while the jungle experience is top notch, the beach portion of a Belize itinerary is not necessarily straightforward. So I was thrilled to learn about the new Naia Resort, which recently opened in Placencia on the southern coast of Belize.
Intimately sized, with less than 40 beach houses spread over a quarter mile of palm-studded beach, Naia Resort and Spa is definitely one of the best resorts on Belize coast for families.
Here’s what you need to know about this fabulous beach resort in Belize.
Ideal Accommodation Options for Families
Designed for families or small groups, Naïa’s two and three-bedroom Beach Houses provide all comfort of a private home. Fully equipped kitchens and spacious pool decks make these residences ideal for families, while custom furnishings and upscale amenities offer a tranquil retreat after a day spent exploring Placencia and the beauty of Belize.
I love the bright and airy living space and large glass patio doors and windows offering great views of the beach and nearby cayes, and opens onto the pool deck.
Bedrooms feature large closets and their own oversized, spa-inspired bathrooms with dual sinks and shower/tub combos. Most of the stylish two-bedroom Beach Houses feature a king bed in the master bedroom and a queen bed in the guest bedroom, while some include king beds in both.
Outdoor verandas are crafted from sapodilla – the tree tapped for chewing gum – complete with an outdoor dining area, deck, and a private pool.
All of the villas and houses have full kitchens, which is ideal for families, but be sure to check out the on site restaurants at Naia, they are all fabulous!
Plenty of Ways to enjoy the Beach
Between spa treatments or jungle adventures, your family will love hanging out at the resort’s main swimming area, a 50ft saltwater pool with a comfortable shallow ledge. Towels are provided, along with comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas and to recharge after your swim.
As one of the best beach resorts on Belize coast for families, the beach area itself iso course stunning. Shaded by scores of swaying palm trees and native fruit trees, including sea grape, cocoplum and even a hundred-year-old mango tree, from this beach you CAN snorkel right off shore!
Be sure to book a boat trip (or several!) to Belize’s famous barrier reef. This is the best opportunity to see dozens of colorful patch reefs and the stunning white sandy Cayes (perfect for beach picnics and a day of relaxing!) for which Belize is well known.
Local Culture in Placencia
Historically a small fishing village, many residents of Placencia are now actively involved in tourism, guiding SCUBA diving and snorkeling on the Belize Barrier Reef, as well as taking visitors out on the water for reef or fly fishing. Back on land, Placencia Village moves at its own pace: a diverse community with its own unique flavor— genuinely welcoming without all the gentrification other cities in Belize have experienced.
If you head into town, be sure to grab a drink at either the Barefoot Bar or the Sloppy Tuna, two fabulous locally-owned bars.
The village of Seine Bight, five miles north of Placencia, is home to the Garifuna, a mixture of Africans and Carib Indians from the Eastern Caribbean who took refuge in Belize in the early 19th century. The Garifuna maintain a unique language and distinct culture, rich in culinary and musical tradition and offer a great opportunity to experience some unique Belizean culture!
