While family travel is my jam, I always love working on trips for couples, girlfriend getaways and groups of friends traveling together! And Mexico is always an easy option for quick warm weather getaways.
The Excellence all inclusive resorts are great options for groups of couples traveling together. They are adult only, the food is definitely better than most all inclusives, service is fabulous and overall, they are a great adult-only getaway! In the Cancun area there are two Excellence-branded all inclusive resorts, and so it’s no surprise that I’m often asked; Which is better Excellence Playa Mujeres vs Excellence Riviera Cancun?
When comparing these two resorts there are a few key differences and things to consider.
Excellence Playa Mujeres vs Excellence Riviera Cancun
Playa Mujures is a relatively new area of resorts located just to the north of Cancun. Physically removed from the frenetic energy of Cancun, Playa Mujeres is an intimate community dominated by low-rise architecture and a generally relaxed atmosphere.
Cancun is about 20 minutes away, but most people who stay here choose not to leave. But if you do decide to book the Excellence Playa Mujeres, be sure to take time to hop on the nearby ferry and visit Isla Mujeres for the day! Once you get to this charming island, rent a golf cart and explore the island. This only takes about on hour to circumnavigate, and you’ll have amazing views out to sea, you can explore a cool outdoor sculpture garden and visit a sea turtle conservation center. End at Playa Norte and spend a few hours relaxing at one of the best beaches in the region!
If you’re looking to get out and see Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Excellence Riviera Cancun is more suitably located. While again most people booking an Excellence resort are most often looking for relaxation and won’t leave the resort, the Excellence Riviera Cancun is a better home base if you’d like to explore some of the local villages (it’s actually located near Puerto Morelos, a cute town south of Cancun), Playa del Carmen or enjoy excursions during your stay.
The main difference between room types at both resorts is view, location and if they have a rooftop terrace or not. At both Excellence Playa Mujeres and Excellence Riviera Cancun, all rooms are large suites and generally outfitted similarly, including large sunbathing beds on every balcony. I think the rooftop terrace is a fabulous benefit worth splurging on, and fairly unique for the area!
The Excellence Club:
The Excellence Club, available at both Excellence Playa Mujeres and Excellence Riviera Cancun, offers an additional level of service. Guests booking rooms in these categories have a special check in and checkout area in the Excellence Club Lounge, access to a private concierge, Bvlgari amenities in room, Nespresso machine in the room and access to a private beach area. Honestly I don’t think it’s always worth upgrading to the Excellence Club, but could be a nice splurge for a Honeymoon or other special occasion.
(Also, it’s worth mentioning that the spas at both Excellence Mujeres and Excellence Riviera Cancun are fantastic and a must-experience during your stay!)
Dining at Excellence All Inclusive Resorts:
The food at both resorts is very good. In fact, the food is better than many of the all inclusive resorts I’ve visited in Mexico. All dinners at this resort are a la carte and do not require a reservation. If the restaurant is full they will give you a pager and beep you when a table is available.
The bottom line:
Both of these resorts are fabulous options for an adult only, couples getaway. The Playa Mujeres property is typically a few hundred dollars per person more than the Riviera Cancun property. This is largely due to the more isolated and exclusive location and it being a newer property.
