Chartering a yacht and cruising around the islands of Croatia has always been on my personal travel bucket list. Along the Croatian coastline and throughout the Dalmatian Islands, the calm sea waters are ideal for sailing. The small islands, some inhabited and some not, are just perfect for exploring over the course of a week making for several great itinerary options for family sailing trips in Croatia.
If you’ve been thinking about chartering a yacht for your next family trip, here are a few reasons why you should consider Croatia!
Charming Cities to Bookend Your Sailing Trip
Split is a perfect setting off point for a sailing charter. Croatia’s second largest city, Split is full of ancient history, including the spectacular Diocletian’s Palace which makes up about half of the city’s Old Town.
Here I love the Judita Palace in Split, a charming boutique hotel. Great service, warm and inviting atmosphere and situated in an extensive four-story traditional building right in the historic city center.
Also spend at least one day exploring the beautiful National Park Krka – which really is a must see! Including some of the most iconic scenes of Croatia, here you’ll find dramatic waterfalls and gorges, with the river gushing through a karstic canyon 200m deep. This is about a one hour drive from Split.
Plenty of Charter Options
There are plenty of boat charter options available in Croatia. Spending the week under sail is always a fun option, and here I usually suggest sail boats vs motor yachts. Vessels typically contain between 4 and 8 bedrooms, so plenty of room for multiple families to travel together along with a crew of between 2 and 4 people.
And finally, one of the main reasons Croatia is my top pick for a family sailing trip is because my team of people there are fantastic. Super helpful, warm, engaging and passionate about their country, while traveling in Croatia you will see and feel this from the moment you arrive!!
