Like many travelers, immediately after the holiday hustle you may have started planning Spring Break, summer travel or even thinking about taking “that big trip” now that the kids are a little older.
January is traditionally the busiest travel booking month of the year and YES things have been busy! I have families right now booking Costa Rica and Belize, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Hawaii and some fabulous summer travel to Greece and beyond!
However, Spring Break is posing the biggest challenge right now. Across Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean there is very limited inventory when it comes to accommodations and flights are priced at a premium. My clients who booked back in September were able to score great deals, but those who waited are facing some of these challenges.
SO – next year be sure to contact me in September or October to plan and book Spring Break. BUT if you are still looking to book a fun Spring break family getaway – here are a few great ideas (all priced right around $5,000 for a family of 4) for your family to consider!
Hawaii – Kauai – South Side of the Island
Kauai is Hawaii’s fourth largest island and is sometimes called the “Garden Isle,” which is an entirely accurate description. The oldest and northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain is draped in emerald valleys, sharp mountain spires and jagged cliffs, aged by time and the elements. Centuries of growth have formed tropical rainforests, forking rivers and cascading waterfalls.
If your family is active, and would enjoy hiking, zip lining, mountain biking, in addition to swimming and snorkeling, be sure to canister Kauai.
While inventory is limited, there are a few 2-bedroom condos available on the southern side of the island, Poipu. I love the Castle Poipu Shores for fabulous views and being able to hear the crash of the waves from bed. Poipu and Brennecke Beaches are both within a ten minute walk from the property. Also, the Koloa Landing Resort and Spa has availability for 2-bedroom condos, complete with gourmet kitchens, natural stone flowing and magnificent, large lanais (patios). This is a FABULOUS property for families, and offers easy access to Koloa Landing, a horseshoe bay that is a popular snorkel and shore doing site.
Costa Rica – How About a Beach Sandwich?
Starting and ending with some quality beach time – with some jungle fun thrown in the middle – is the recipe for a perfect Spring Break if you ask me!
While many properties book up well in advance in Costa Rica, there is actually a TON of inventory (unlike other Central American countries like Belize and Nicaragua). So while it may not be the “name brand” hotel that everyone is talking about, you can still find charming boutique hotels in the main areas with availability for Spring Break. Consider booking Puerto Viejo – Arenal – and Manual Antonio for a fabulous family itinerary.
Dominican Republic – Gloriously Remote Samana Peninsula
This remote corner of the Dominican Republic is a little sleepy (and that’s a good thing!) – which means you can usually find availability here! Right now the spectacular Sublime Samana still has available for Spring Break in a luxurious 2-bedroom condo. You can read my full and details review of the property here.
The Samana peninsula is a wonderful destination for beaches (you may be the only ones there!) and some fun jungle adventure. It’s also a great place to practice your Spanish, as very few people here outside of the hotels speak English.
