Where to go for your family fall break beach vacation

I’ve spent the past week working on several family fall break beach vacation itineraries. Sure, school is just getting out for the summer. But busy parents are already planning for fun fall getaways!  For most families in the U.S, fall break falls in October, after a few months of school but before the Thanksgiving break at the end of November.

October is a tricky time of year to plan a family beach vacation, largely because this is the rainy, hurricane season across the Caribbean. However, there are some great options for a warm weather getaway during the month of October.

Here are five of my favorite family fall beach vacation destinations. What looks the best to you?

Four Seasons Lana’i, Hawaii

Located near the island of Maui in Hawaii, the Four Seasons Lana’i is the only property on this lush, untouched, pristine island. October is a fabulous month to visit Hawaii, as temperatures are still in the 80’s each day and the nights are very pleasant in the mid-70’s.

Lanai’s diverse coastline offers beaches fit for relaxing as well as adventures! Hulopoe Beach is the beautiful back yard of Four Seasons Resort Lanai, offering excellent snorkeling and swimming conditions. You can also sink your toes into white sand on a secluded beach accessible only by 4×4, comb the shores of Kaiolohia for sea glass, or learn to surf in the shallow, inviting waters of Lopa Beach.

Here you can book an “all adventures included” package, so your family can literally stay busy from sun up to sun down. Plus, I have a special relationship with this property as a preferred partner, so my clients get free breakfast and a nice resort credit to be used on site as well as a room upgrade upon arrival is availability allows.

Curacao, located in the southern Caribbean, lies outside of the hurricane belt, making it one of the best destinations to visit if you would like to book a Caribbean beach vacation during the month of October. I recently had a chance to explore this island from East to West – check out my review of Curacao and the lovely Baoase Resort here.

While the most popular time to visit the Greek islands is May through September – the weather is still lovely through October and the crowds are long gone. Greece is a wonderful destination for a fun, and unique, fall break. Spend a few days in Athens taking in all the historic sites – a fabulous opportunity to work in education and world schooling into a fun family vacation (so don’t worry about taking the kids out of school for an extra day or two!). Then,  head out to the islands for a few days of fun at the beach. Naxos is one of the most family friendly islands in Greece, here’s why.

While Fiji sure sounds exotic, it’s closer than you might think. Fiji Airlines has daily direct flights from Los Angeles which are very reasonably priced. October in to early November is actually the BEST time of the year to travel to Fiji, making it a perfect family fall break beach vacation destination!

Here I love Mana Island for families. In addition to picture perfect beaches and a low-key atmosphere perfect for letting the kids run around all day, here you can visit with the local communities and even get involved in the planting of coral and sea turtle conservation.

San Diego, California

Early October is still a nice time to travel to San Diego, and there is perhaps no better place to stay if you’re traveling with kids than the Hotel del Coronado. Here you can enjoy the amazing resort, pick sand dollars on the beach and enjoy an evening fire pit on the beach, complete with all the fixings for s’mores!
