About 5 minutes after arriving, I was handed the keys to a golf cart and a map. “Have fun!,” she said. And with that I set off to explore Punta Mita.
Located just one hour north of Puerto Vallarta, this small peninsula offers a completely different experience from the bustling big city further south. Discover dramatic cliffs, white sandy beaches, luxe villas (and some fun excursions!) perched right next to local homes on the beach.
This contrast and authenticity make Punta Mita not only a comfortable destination to visit but an ideal one for travelers who typically shy away from big resorts and crowded destinations.
I’ve always been a bit of a snob when it come to the western coast of Mexico. When planning beach vacations for my clients (and enjoying my own family beach vacations!) the quality of the beach is very important. Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos usually miss the mark for me because the beaches are not swimmable (aside from a few notable exceptions).
However after a particularly rough season of the sargassum situation around Cancun on the Caribbean side of Mexico, I decided to check out a few other areas on the Western side of Mexico that were still within easy, direct flights from around the U.S. I’m thrilled to report that Punta Mita checks all the boxes and is a fabulous alternative to Cancun for an easy beach vacation in Mexico.
Here’s what you need to know about where to stay in Punta Mita Mexico with kids.
Zen Villas in Porto Fortuna
Particularly with very young children, booking a villa while traveling is comfortable way to travel. You have separate sleeping rooms, a full kitchen and space for kids to safely run around. And the great thing about these villas in Punta Mita is there are also “beach clubs” around the property to which you have complimentary access. Here you can enjoy large pools and great service, the important “resort style amenities” that don’t always come with villa rentals. This access card also gets you access to the St Regis beach club as well.
Zen Villa #9 in the Porto Fortuna section of Punta Mita is a fabulous option for a family villa in Punta Mita. This villa will comfortably sleep 2 families. Here you have a small private heated pool and large grassy area where kids can run around (it’s adjacent to the golf course).
A 2 minute walk away is a lovely beach club with a large pool, and a short golf cart ride away is a stunning stretch of beach and another beach club.
Waking up in the super comfortable master bedroom, I opened the windows (which are essentially floor to ceiling walls of glass that completely open so you feel as if you are completely outside), took in a delicious breath of ocean air and truly relaxed for the first time in what seemed like forever. Now that’s luxury.
St. Regis Punta Mita
This St. Regis Punta Mita is also a wonderful place to stay in Punta Mita with kids! Here the beach is calm, protected and perfect swimming conditions for even the youngest kiddos.
There are 3 pools, including one adults only, one for children (think zero entry, splash pad, etc) and a lovely large pool at the beach club.
Accommodations are spread out over the low-profile property so even when the property is full it will never feel crowded. The Junior Suite, which includes a king bed, large sitting area and full dining table, connects to a Standard Suite which is a perfect set up for families.
There are also a few suites with private plunge pools right on the beach which are great fun!
Finally, at the St Regis kids club programming is free for guests, and there is am ever changing lineup of activities throughout the day. Plenty to keep the kids busy while also allowing for a bit of adult time as well!
W Punta Mita
Now for something a little different, the W Punta Mita is also worth considering, especially if you have teenage children (or looking for a fun adults only getaway). Located just outside of the Punta Mita complex, it’s not possible to use the golf cart here and you won’t have complimentary access to the beach clubs within Punta Mita proper.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll notice the truly unique art and vibrant decor.
Inspired by nearby surf town Sayulita and bohemian Mecca San Pancho, every last detail (such as the ornate tile walkway snaking through reception all the way down to the beach) draws from the local culture.
Even the beach snack shack is built around a charming old “Chevy” truck, very likely pulled right from the streets of one of these charming towns.
Here the pool scene is lively and fun! There is often live music and generally a really fun scene. A quiet adults only pool will be constructed this summer (anticipated completion October 2018).
The spa at the W Punta Mita is also a must! This “cave inspired” structure features treatment rooms that open completely into the jungle, and the pre- and post-treatment soaking pools are inviting and calm.
Finally, unlike another properties in the area, at the W Punta Mita the beach is wide and you can walk for miles in either direction.
If you’d prefer to stay in villa style accommodations – I have access to several amazing condos located right next to the W Punta Mita. When you stay in one of these villas (priced around $1800 per night for a unit that sleeps 8 people) you also have access to the W resort amenities.
